VUSD Summer School
Terms of Agreement and Understanding
Extended Year
Philosophy and State Guidelines:
The State of
California specifically regulates the types of offerings for the Extended Year
program. These regulations are listed as
follows:
First priority must serve pupils who are not making sufficient progress to pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)
Remaining hours can
be used for other local priorities, including pupils at risk of being retained,
those with low test scores, graduating seniors, those who would otherwise not
graduate with their class, etc.
The core class
offerings are English, mathematics, social science and science. Access to classes is limited by funding,
available staffing, and in the case of science classes, laboratory space. This means that not all students (depending
upon demand) may be able to enroll in the core academic classes. The pacing of summer school is considerably
faster than the regular year, and students will take the same end-of-course
exams as the regular year students.
If space is available
for a student to take a core class, the counselors/learning directors
will make final placement of a student in an Extended Year (Summer School)
class according to the following priorities:
1.
Assist students with reading and math that will increase their ability
to pass the California High School Exit Exam
2.
Assist students who have gotten behind in requirements or units for
graduation
3. Assist a student in opening up his/her
schedule for classes that would otherwise be difficult to take and / or assist
a student in accelerating classes to graduate early.
ENROLLMENT WILL BE DONE ON A LOTTERY BASIS IN
CORE ACADEMIC CLASSES WHERE DEMAND EXCEEDS SPACE AVAILABILITY.
Attendance in the Extended Year Program does not preclude a student from taking the required six classes during the regular school year.
Students who wish to
apply for an Extended Year class must fill out the summer school application form.
Registration for
extended year classes will take place at the time of registration for classes
for the 2014-2015 school year. When
students meet with their counselors/learning directors for the registration
process, extended year materials and applications will be made available.
The application calls
for a review of the classes that the student wishes to take by his/her parent
and counselor/learning director. Once
the application is completed, the student or parent must deliver the
application to the Student Services' office by the listed deadline date.
In
order to be assured of receiving appropriate priority as dictated by law
students should select their courses as follows:
1. First priority for placement in
summer school will go to students who need assistance in passing the
CAHSEE. If you have taken but not yet
passed one or both portions of the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE),
or have not demonstrated grade level proficiency in English or mathematics, you
should sign up for the appropriate remediation class in consultation with your
counselor/learning director.
2. Second priority goes to students who
are short on credits for graduation. If
you have failed any required classes and need to make them up, those should be
prioritized as first choice, second choice and third choice. Only when you run out of classes
previously failed can you select a class which will accelerate you.
3. Third priority goes to students who
wish to accelerate. If you are
requesting Extended Year for this purpose or to open up space in your schedule,
you should consider carefully which classes you truly want to take. Do not select an alternate that you do not
want to take in extended year classes. Do
not expect to be allowed to take fewer than six classes during the regular
school year as a result of having attended in summer.
Due
to air-conditioning and other facilities issues, high school Extended Year
programs are often combined at two sites.
Those two sites will be determined in Spring.
Extended
Year begins Tuesday, June 10 and ends
Thursday, July 17. As an
energy-conservation measure, Extended Year will be held for 4 days a week.

Students
will receive their Extended Year schedule during the last two weeks of the
regular school year. Schedules for individual students will also be posted
along with a map with room number locations for each class just outside the
Student Services office on the first day of Extended Year. Please check with the Student Services office
at your home site for maps of Extended Year site. Refer to a map of the Extended Year school
campus for class location to ease your first day of Extended Year.
The following regulations
must be adhered to by any student in the Extended Year program:
All regular school rules apply, including the conduct code, dress code and the truancy/tardy policy.
An Extended Year class is essentially a year-long program that has been condensed into 6 weeks. A single day's absence from Extended Year equates to a week's absence from the regular school. Any student who misses more than 2 days per semester or more than three days per year may be dropped from the program. This includes absences for illness and family vacation. There are no “excused” absences during Extended Year.
We understand that there are numerous valuable opportunities that take place during the summer months. In some cases, such opportunities conflict with Extended Year dates. Students should not apply to the Extended Year program if they cannot commit to the entire term of the class (usually 6 weeks).
Students not attending Tuesday, June 10, 2014, will be dropped from summer
school.
Re-enrollment for dropped students will be on a space available basis.
Extended Year is a commitment for the full term. Classes cannot be dropped at any time without consequences. A student who is able to take a class and decides to drop the class after the first 3 days will essentially have prevented another Visalia student from enrolling in the class.
Final exams will be
conducted on the last day of Extended Year.
Students must be present and must participate in finals in order to
receive credit. There will be no exceptions
made for students wanting to be dismissed prior to the last day of Extended
Year (Summer School). Please
plan family vacations and other summer events with this in mind.
Please note: Per State DMV regulations, Driver Education
students must be in class for 30 hours to receive a pink slip. There is no allowance for any absences.
Extended Year grades
will be mailed to students in the early weeks of August and are then recorded
on the transcripts in late August. If a student
needs the grade to be recorded for athletic or activity eligibility, the
student should let the Extended Year counselor/learning director know.
Students should be
sure to see their class instructor on the last day of Extended Year to find out
the final grade in the class. If the
student is unable to accomplish this, any question regarding grades cannot be
resolved until the teacher returns to the regular school program in late
August.
Extended Year applications
will be processed in April-May. Turning
in an application does not necessarily guarantee enrollment. Meeting the registration deadline, demand for
classes, and core classes versus classes needed for graduation are all factors
in enrollment. You will know whether or
not the class or classes that you have chosen have been processed for you by
June 1.
You can check with your counselor/learning director the very next week or check in the Student Service office on the Extended Year enrollment list. At this time, a room location will also be listed.
By clicking below you agree to the Extended year terms and conditions and will be directed to the Course Request page
